The Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University and the Carmelite Monastery will present programs March 13 and 14 in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Trappist Thomas Merton.
The celebration, “Thomas Merton and the Spanish Mystics,” will be presented by Cristóbal Serrán-Pagán y Fuentes, a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga.
On March 13 at 7 p.m., the public is invited to the Carmelite Monastery, 1740 Newburg Road, for a free program on “St. Teresa of Avila and Thomas Merton: Ruminations on the Mixed Life of Carmel.”
On March 14, Bellarmine, 2001 Newburg Road, will host a retreat from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will include presentations on “A Cosmic Dance between Contemplative Prayer and Apostolic Action” and “John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila and Thomas Merton: A Mysticism of Everyday Life.”
