Sister of Loretto Carol Dunphy (formerly Sister Peter Michael), who helped establish the first Loretto mission in South America, died Feb. 19 at the Loretto Motherhouse in Nerinx, Ky. She was 92 and in her 66th year as a Sister of Loretto.
Sister Dunphy, a native of Eastlake, Colo., was appointed the sisters’ first superior of Colegio Loreto in La Paz, Bolivia, in 1960 and in 1962, she became the regional superior for all Loretto missions in South America.
In the Archdiocese of Louisville, Sister Dunphy began teaching at Loretto High School in 1967 and served as principal of the school from 1971 to 1973. She also served as administrative assistant to the Senate of Religious from 1973 to 1975.
Sister Dunphy has also served in administration for the Sisters of Loretto, worked with Vietnamese refugees and in the Colorado Catholic Conference. She retired in 2003 to the Loretto Motherhouse Infirmary.
She is survived by her sisters, Sister of Loretto Lois Dunphy of Nerinx and Phyllis Brachle of Denver.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Feb. 24 at the Church of the Seven Dolors at the Loretto Motherhouse.
