Blanket Louisville

Sixth- through eighth-grade students at St. Mary Academy in Prospect, Ky., gathered to make blankets for the “Blanket Louisville Project” Nov. 19.
The students cut and tied off the ends of fluffy, colorful, fleece pieces to make twin-size blankets in collaboration with the seventh-grade stewardship study about homelessness.
Blanket Louisville is a community-wide project that coordinates the collection of new and gently used blankets, which are donate to various homeless shelters in Louisville in cooperation with the Coalition for the Homeless, a news release from the school said. More than 64,000 blankets have been distributed to date.

Student honor

Ivonne Gonzalez, a senior at Sacred Heart Academy, has been named the Adelante Hispanic Achiever of the Month. Gonzalez was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and lives in Shelbyville. She has been an Adelante Achiever since the sixth grade.
The Adelante Hispanic Achiever program was created “to empower Louisville’s Hispanic youth by helping them succeed in four critical areas of development: personal, social, cultural and education,” a news release from the school said.

Letters of intent

  • Six Sacred Heart Academy seniors signed national letters of intent to participate in college athletics Nov. 13.
    They are: Dai Jia Ruffin (basketball), University of Tennessee-Martin; Raven Merriweather (basketball), Bellarmine University; Ashley Askin (volleyball), Georgia Tech; Ashley LeClair (swimming), University of Louisville; Madison Lichtefeld (swimming), Georgia Southern University; and Hillary Reader (golf), Lipscomb University.
  • Seven seniors at Assumption High School signed national letters of intent to play volleyball in college on Nov. 13.

They are: Cassidy Anderson, University of Georgia; Alyssa Cavanaugh, Western Kentucky University; Alexa Filley, Auburn University; Hannah Moore, Wayne State University; Sabrina Schleuger, Tusculum College; Jessie Thornton, Wright State University; and Lauren Tutwiler, Florida Gulf Coast University.

Fall play

The St. Margaret Mary musical theater program will host “Alice in Wonderland, Jr.” Nov. 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. Both performances will be held in the Parish Activity Center, 7813 Shelbyville Road. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased online at showtix4u.com.

State champs

  • The Assumption High School volleyball team celebrated its fourth consecutive state volleyball championship at the school Nov. 11. The rockets beat Mercy Academy in the semifinals Nov. 9 and defeated Notre Dame Academy of Park Hills, Ky., in the finals Nov. 10.
  • The cross country team at Assumption High School also claimed a state championship win Nov. 9. The school hosted a victory celebration Nov. 12.

Holiday concert

St. Xavier High School will host two concerts during December, one of which is a Christmas concert. Both events will be held in the school’s auditorium, 1609 Poplar Level Road. The concerts are family friendly, free and open to the public.
The Jazz Band and Tiger Chorus will play traditional Christmas music as well as other fun selections Dec. 8 at 2 p.m.
The end-of-semester concert will be Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. This concert will showcase the St. X Jungle Drummers, as well as the music ensemble, percussion and instrumental music classes. The students will play selections from a variety of genres including rock, country, Latin jazz and post-bop jazz.

All-state chorus

Five Assumption High School students were selected for the 2013-14 Kentucky Music Educators of America All-state Chorus.
They are: seniors Abby Glass, Lynnzi Hoehler, Katy Kline, junior Hannah Thomas and sophomore Madelyn Steurer.
The girls will perform with the choir Feb. 7 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts.

Food collection

Third-graders at St. Mary Academy collected food for the Eastern Area Ministries and the Immaculate Conception Church’s food pantry.
