Writing award

Assumption High School seniors Melanie Bayens, Tess Bettler and Stephanie Campbell finished first, second and third respectively in a literary analysis writing contest held by the Kentucky Council of Teachers of English/Language Arts. The trio won in statewide competition in the secondary school division.

Eagle Scout

Trinity High School junior Peter Senn recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of Troop 194 at St. Martha Church.
For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Senn planned, organized and supervised the construction of a retaining wall on the south side of St. Martha Church. This area between the church building and the driveway next to the rectory had a drainage and runoff problem that was corrected by the retaining wall, a news release said.

Kindergarten fun

Kindergarten Countdown, a series of events for students entering kindergarten, will be hosted at various locations in Louisville this summer. Children entering Kindergarten will receive a free Kindergarten Countdown t-shirt and book.
One child and an accompanying adult get in to each event at no charge. Stop by any Louisville Free Public Library to register. The next event will be held Aug. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Newburg Church of Christ, 4700 E. Indian Trail.
Additional events will be held at the Louisville Slugger Field, 401 E. Main Street, Aug. 7 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Aug. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Walden Theatre, 1123 Payne Street.

AP Scholars

One hundred and fourteen of the 285 St. Xavier High School students who took Advanced Placement exams in May 2013 have been recognized as AP Scholars by the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program.
A total of 664 Advanced Placement exams in 23 subjects were administered to St. X students and 91.4 percent of those students earned scores that qualified them to receive college credit.
