Vocabulary contest

Two students from St. Nicholas Academy received a perfect score in the last of three meets for this year’s WordMasters, a national vocabulary competition.
Fourth-grader Grace Medley and fifth-grader Shannon Nguyen each earned a perfect score of 20 in the blue division at a recent WordMasters meet.

Kindergarten fun

Kindergarten Countdown, a series of events for students entering kindergarten, will be hosted at various locations in Louisville this summer. Children entering Kindergarten will receive a free Kindergarten Countdown t-shirt and book. One child and an accompanying adult get in to each event at no charge. Stop by any Louisville Free Public Library to register. Upcoming events are below.
The next events will be at StageOne, 301 York St., July 13 at 10 a.m.; and the Louisville Free Public Library, Bon Air location, 2816 Del Rio Place, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Additional upcoming events will be held at the Walden Theatre, 1123 Payne Street, July 26 at 1 p.m.; and July 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Kentucky Science Center, 727 W. Main Street.

Summer reading

The West Louisville Youth Space (formerly the St. Anthony Outreach Center), 2234 West Market St., will host a free Summer Reading Enrichment Camp.
The camp will be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays July 9 to Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The camp is desgined for children ages five to 17. Breakfast, snacks and lunch are provided. For more information call Sis Von Kanel at 776-9126.

Merit scholars

Seven additional St. Xavier High School 2013 graduates received college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. They are: Geoffrey Bohn (University of Louisville); Kerry Bin Su (University of Kentucky); Tanner Thieneman (University of Kentucky); Timothy Hagan (University of Kentucky); Blaine Skaggs (Vanderbilt University); Ryan McMillen (University of South Carolina); Collin Stevens  (Arizona State University); and Andrew Parola (Lehigh University).
