Sixth-grade students in the children’s formation program at St. Bernadette Church have led an effort to help people affected by Hurricane Sandy. During a two-week fund-raising effort, students in the parish GIFT (Growing in Faith Together program) and St. Mary Academy collected $2,000. The students plan to send the money to St. Bernadette Church in Parlin, N.J.
Presentation Academy junior Emily Clark placed first in the Pearson Online Learning Exchange Citizen Journalist contest for her blog submission “Show You Care: Vote!” Students were asked to write a blog post or create a video covering a topic related to the 2012 presidential election. Clark’s entry discussed the importance of America’s right to vote.
Trinity High School senior Joseph Senn has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Senn is a member of Troop 194, sponsored by St. Martha Church. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Senn cleared overgrowth, planted flowers and installed a bench in the Friendly Hills neighborhood.
The National Catholic Youth Choir is seeking high school singers to audition for the 2013 camp and multistate concert tour held at Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minn., June 17 to July 2. Apply online at CatholicYouthChoir.org. Applications and auditions are due March 18.
Members of the 2012 Trinity High School cross country team have been honored by the Kentucky Track & Cross Country Coaches Association. Nick Eckert, Andrew Ireland and Blake Merkley were named academic all-state. Evan Hancock, Keegan Raidt and Derrich Stauble were named to the all-state second team. The varsity team also had a team GPA of 3.76.
St. Xavier High School student Nicholas J. Sehlinger received the highest possible composite score of 36 on the ACT taken in October, 2012. Sehlinger is considering biomedical engineering as his undergraduate major before medical school.
St. Xavier High School seniors Benjamin Janocik and John Nolan were selected for the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) 2013 All-state Jazz Ensemble. Janocik earned first bass on upright double bass and Nolan was named pianist. The 2013 KMEA conference will be held Feb. 6 to 9 at the Kentucky International Convention Center.
Player of the Year
Courtney Crable, a junior at Mercy Academy, has been named the 2012-2013 Gatorade Kentucky Volleyball Player of the Year.
Assumption High School’s delegation received several honors at the Kentucky Youth Assembly, held last month at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Freshman Brittany Nordhoff was recognized as Outstanding Delegate. In the judicial program, junior Haley Keene won her case and was appointed the chief justice of the Supreme Court.
Third-grade students from John Paul II Academy sang Christmas songs to more than 50 elderly refugee clients at the Catholic Charities ESL School program. Following the songs, the students gave the ESL clients gloves, hats and scarves and made craft projects. Students from Sacred Heart Academy also assisted with the annual Christmas party.
St. Xavier High School senior Kaelon Fox has been named to the 2012 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) High School Boys All-America Team. Fox has also been named Kentucky’s 2012 Mr. Soccer. Four Tiger soccer players were named to the 2012 NSCAA Scholar All-America Team. They are: Kaelon Fox, David Means, Ryan Sullivan and Campbell Weyland. To be nominated, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better (on a 4.0 scale), must have demonstrated excellence in soccer and must have performed community service.
