Five teams of students representing St. Francis of Assisi School recently won high honors in the WordMasters Challenge — a national language arts competition which consists of three separate meets held throughout the school year. More than 220,000 students enter the competition annually.
Competing in the Blue Division, the school’s fourth-graders placed 12th in the nation in the year-end cumulative standings among 698 school teams. The school’s fifth-graders placed fifth in the nation among 706 competing teams, and the sixth-graders ranked third nationally among 403 teams. The seventh-grade team placed ninth out of 294 teams, and the eighth-grade team tied for 11th place out of 302 teams.
Sophia Samutin, a junior at Sacred Heart Academy, has been selected to attend the Bill of Rights Institute’s Constitutional Academy program in Washington, D.C. July 9 to 14. A Ford Motor Company Fund scholarship will cover Samutin’s travel and program expenses.
- William Tompkins, a senior at St. Xavier High School, has been awarded a National Merit Dow Chemical Company Scholarship. Tompkins plans to study medicine and chemical engineering.
- Patricia Dunlevy, a senior at Assumption High School, and Jacob Mattingly, a senior a Trinity High School, have been awarded 2012 National Merit $2500 Scholarships.
Letters of intent
Sixteen Trinity High School seniors have committed to continue participation in athletics at the college level.

Air Force seminar
St. Xavier High School student Hunter Daniel has been selected to the United States Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar. The weeklong program in June is an opportunity for high school students to see a realistic glimpse of cadet life.
For the second consecutive year, Trinity High School swept the writing and photography honors in the Publishers Press/Billy Reed Journalism Award Competition, which is sponsored by LouisvilleCatholicSports.com. Seniors Mike Wagner (writing) and Chris Pfeiffer (photography) were honored at an awards ceremony May 15.
In addition, junior Philip Truman was selected as one of three metro area recipients of the Society of Professional Journalists Junior Journalist Award.
Barrett Greenwell, a senior at Bethlehem High School, has been awarded a 2012 Coca-Cola Scholarship. He is the son of Clarence and Sue Greenwell of Bardstown, Ky., and is a member of The Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral.
Sarah Beth Hayden, a student at Bethlehem High School, and Cyrus Gaines Felfeli, a student at Trinity High School, have been accepted in the Governor’s Scholars Program.
