Shoe drive for Haiti

Second-grade students from St. James School in Elizabethtown, Ky., collected nearly 600 pairs of shoes during a recent collection drive to benefit St. James Church’s sister parish in Haiti, St. Marc Church.
St. James ships a collection of items to the parish every April. This year, shoes were listed among the St. Marc community’s needs.
The collection served as a service project for St. James students preparing for First Communion.

Shoes for water

DeSales High School was recognized last month by EDGE Outreach for conducting a drive called “Shoes for Water.” ?EDGE uses money received for these shoes to provide clean, safe water around the world.
DeSales collected a total of 1,318 pairs of shoes, as part of the drive held during Catholic Schools Week.

Junk Week

St. Xavier High School’s Environmental Club joined efforts with OurEarthNow, a Louisville teen environmental group, to raise awareness about the threat of climate change. The club organized “Junk Week” which took place March 26-30. According to a release from the school, some of the goals of the awareness week were to increase student awareness of the amount of waste produced daily and to increase energy conservation. Competitions were held to reward the lunch periods that produce the least amount of trash. Additionally, lights were turned off in several areas of the school to conserve energy.

Perfect ACT

Jonathan Fish, a junior at St. Xavier High School, received the highest possible composite score of 36 on the February 2012 administration of the ACT. Fish resides in Finchville, Ky., and attended grade school at St. Michael School in Louisville.

Theater

  • The middle school Music Theatre Program at Ascension School will present “Willy Wonka Kids’ Spring Musical” May 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. in the school gym, 4600 Lynnbrook Drive.Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or in advance in the school office.
  • Assumption High School will present “Crimes of the Heart” as the spring play for the school’s Rose Theatre Company April 21 and 22 at 2 p.m., April 25, 26 and 28 at 7 p.m. and April 29 at 1 p.m. at the school’s Human Performing and Fine Arts center. Tickets are $7 for students and seniors and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the door or preordered at ahsrockets.org.
  • Sacred Heart School for the Arts will present “The Neverending Story: Atreyu and the Great Quest” April 19 at 10 p.m., April 20 at 7 p.m. and April 21 at 1 p.m. All shows will be in the Ursuline Arts Center, building #5, on the Ursuline Campus, 3105 Lexington Road. Tickets for the April 20 and 21 performances are $5 for students/senior citizens and $8 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at http://www.showtix4u.com.

Art show

Ascension School will host an art show featuring the work of students in all grades May 9-21. Art will be displayed in the gathering space outside the church.
The art show is open during school hours, and there is no cost to attend.
