Louisville Catholic Sports Network honors students

For the third year, Louisville Catholic Sports Network has distributed more than $18,000 in college scholarships to local Catholic school athletes, team managers and students involved in sports journalism/media.

Seven awards and scholarships were presented to students May 14 at the Audubon Country Club. WDRB TV Sports Director Tom Lane served as the event’s emcee and Hall of Fame journalist Bill Reed spoke to those in attendance.

Kristin Matula of Sacred Heart Academy and Jacob Thomson of Holy Cross High School received the Bonnycastle Appliance and TV Student-Athlete of the Year Award. Matula will play field hockey for Michigan State University, and Thomson will run track for Carolina State University.

The Toby Tours Distinguished Character Award was presented to Presentation Academy’s Dani Wells for her contributions as a four-year member of both the cheer squad and soccer team.

Sam Allen-Kawa, a student at Trinity High School, received the Mulloy Properties Community Service Award. Since 2009, Allen-Kawa has volunteered each summer at Kosair Children’s Hospital and has worked with Special Olympics.

John Zehnder, also from Trinity, was presented the R.G. Stallings Student Manager Award for his four years of service to the football team. Zehnder will serve as a manager for the football team at  Western Kentucky University.

Publishers Press Billy Reed Journalism Awards were given to St. Xavier High School’s Mitchell Forde for writing and Trinity’s Jake Smith for photojournalism.
